Grumpy Grandad
(2)
The Hole in the Fish Pond

Grumpy Grandad went down to the bottom of his garden and looked at his patio.  Maurice the Mole had dug up all the slabs and Grumpy Grandad was grumbling more than ever today, but at least he knew that Maurice wouldn’t be able to come back because he had taken him far away over the fields.  He needed to put the slabs back where they had been and this time he was going to cement them down so nothing else could push them back up.  Grumpy Grandad worked very hard and finally the patio was looking really good again.

Standing there looking at a job well done, he felt pleased that the patio was alright now and thought how lovely his garden looked.  He threw some fish food into the fish pond and then went into the house.  All he wanted to do now was to make a cup of coffee and enjoy the sunshine in his garden while reading his newspaper.

From where he was sitting by the window he had a great view of his magnificent garden pond. But the funny thing was, the more he looked the more he was sure that the water in the pond was getting lower. Whatever was happening!  The water in the pond was draining away and what had happened to all his precious fish. Grumpy Grandad got up and went over to investigate.

Now what Grumpy Grandad didn’t know was that Maurice the Mole had been making his way back over the fields because he wanted to get under Grumpy Grandad's patio again.  But this time he couldn’t move the slabs.  It didn’t matter how much he pushed he couldn’t get through.  He would have to make another tunnel and get into the garden some other way.  The digging with his paws had taken all night and now he was about to get through the ground. He dug and dug but in front of him was something he had never seen before and he didn’t know what it was. It was black and rubbery and very hard to dig through.  But Maurice was determined he would get through.  Nothing was going to stop Maurice.  And it didn’t.  All of a sudden his nails went through it and Maurice was hit by a big gush of water.  The pressure of the water flushed Maurice back down his hole with such force that when he shot out of the other end of his hole in the field next to Grumpy Grandad’s house he was floating on top of a great jet of water.  He fell on his back with his legs in the air and on top of him landed four big fish.  Guess what? Maurice had dug into Grumpy Grandad’s fish pond.

Rushing outside to see what had happened Grumpy Grandad could see Maurice in the field balancing on the jet of water with all the fish on top of him.  He knew that Maurice must have dug through his pond.  He was so angry he didn’t see the spade lying in front of the pond, and before he could stop himself he had tripped over it and toppled head first into the pond. Well, his glasses flew off and his false teeth came out.  He tried to find them in the bottom of the pond but the water had washed them down the tunnel into the field.  Grumpy Grandad climbed out of the pond, grabbed a bucket to put the fish in and ran over into the field next to the house.  He couldn’t see very well without his glasses and kept falling over things.  Poor Grumpy Grandad, he had a big bump on his head and all his clothes were wet and soggy.  Where is that mole!” he was shouting, “wait till I catch him, he won’t escape this time”.

Maurice the Mole could hear Grumpy Grandad shouting and knew he was out to catch him again.  He tried to run off but his fur was soaking wet and it was weighing him down.

Grumpy Grandad soon found his glasses and when he put them on he could see Maurice trying to run away.  He saw his false teeth laying in a pool of water and put them back into his mouth,

but he spit them straight back out again, they tasted horrible - of fish water.  It had made him feel quite sick.  But as he spit his false teeth out, naughty Nelly the dog, who had followed Grumpy Grandad into the field, thought that Grumpy Grandad had thrown her a bone to eat and  quickly ran off with Grumpy Grandad’s false teeth.  Grumpy Grandad shouted at her to come back but naughty Nelly was enjoying herself, tossing the false teeth up into the air and chewing bits off them.  Grumpy Grandad didn’t know who to chase first.  Should he chase Nelly the dog or should he chase Maurice the Mole? He didn’t know. If he didn’t act quickly, Maurice the Mole was going to escape, but Nelly the dog was going to eat his false teeth.  So first he tried to catch Nelly, but every time Grumpy Grandad got close to her she ran further away.  She was really tucking into the false teeth now, they tasted nice and fishy.  She wasn’t going to let Grumpy Grandad take them off her.  Grumpy Grandad went back to find Maurice who couldn’t run very fast because he was so wet and suddenly the bucket came down on top of him. Grumpy Grandad had caught him again.  Grumpy Grandad carried the bucket back to the garden with Maurice inside it.  He put a lid on top of the bucket and fastened it up with string.  Then he went inside the house to get changed into some clean clothes.  He was going to take Maurice even further away and this time he would make sure that Maurice could never return.

But while Grumpy Grandad was changing into some dry clothes, naughty Nelly came back from the field and started to sniff round the garden to see if she could find any other fishy things to eat.  Then Nelly spotted the bucket with the string tied round it. She started to chew at the string.  She thought there might be something nice inside the bucket.  Suddenly the lid on the bucket came loose and Maurice the Mole scurried out.  Nelly got such a shock that she started barking.  Grumpy Grandad looked out of the window to see what all the noise was about.  He saw Maurice the Mole running away and ran outside to try to catch him.  But it was too late.  Maurice the Mole had gone.  He ran off into the fields and scampered back down his tunnel.

Grumpy Grandad was very very angry indeed. And we all know what happens when Grumpy Grandad gets really angry.  Yes, that’s right, the little bell round his neck starts to ring and Crazy Grandma has to throw a bucket of water over Grumpy Grandad to cool him down or he makes himself very ill.  So as soon as Crazy Grandma heard the little bell ringing out she ran with a bucket of cold water.  Splash, she threw it all over Grumpy Grandad.  He had only just put on some dry clothes after falling into the fish pond and now Crazy Grandma had wet him through again.  “What did you do that for,  you crazy old woman” Grumpy Grandad shouted “you’ve wet me through again”.  “I’m sorry, ” said Crazy Grandma “but I thought you were going to make yourself ill with rage and have to go into hospital, I was only trying to calm you down.  You’d better come back into the house and change your clothes again.”  And Crazy Grandma picked up the bucket and went back inside.

Poor Grumpy Grandad, he looked at his lovely fish pond, it was  empty with a big hole in it. Nelly the dog had eaten his false teeth for her dinner. He’d got bumps and cuts all over him and all his fish were gone. And now he had to go and get changed again because Crazy Grandma had wet him through.  My goodness me, he really had got something to grumble about now.  He’d forgotten to grumble about the postman, the paper boy, the phone ringing and all the other things that made him grumble.  He had only one thing on his mind now and that was Maurice the Mole.  He made up his mind that however long it took him, he would catch Maurice and make sure he never ever got back into his garden again. Meanwhile, Maurice was sitting safely in his tunnel and laughing about all the fun he had just had in Grumpy Grandad's garden.  He had outwitted Grumpy Grandad once again
