It was now winter and the 2 Red Men and 2 Green Men had been on two adventures.  They had decided they would wait until the winter was over before they climbed out of the traffic lights again to go on another adventure.  Green Man had been really scared when he couldn’t get out of the Post Box and wasn’t sure if he wanted to on any more adventures, but Red Man said that once the winter was over and they had been in the traffic lights for a long time he would soon change his mind.  The Red Man and Green Man in the lights at the other side of the road also said they felt a little bit tired and just wanted a rest, but still kept laughing about how they had all fallen into the big paint pots in the garage and changed different colours until the paint had burnt off.

They settled down for the long winter, Red Man stopping the traffic and Green Man letting the children know when it was safe to cross the road.  All day and all night, in all weathers Red Man and Green Man did their job, but oh dear, one day Red Man became very ill.  Some of the paint he had jumped into hadn’t all burnt off his legs and he couldn’t shine properly.  Every time someone pressed the button to cross the busy road, Green Man was the only one that was working.  Red Man was too ill to work.  The boys and girls kept crossing the road to get to school and the traffic just kept on waiting for the Red Man to shine.  But nothing happened.  The people in the cars began to get very angry and started peeping their horns and shouting, but still the Red Man didn’t shine.  More and more cars, bumper to bumper all the way back along the road, just stood still, nothing was moving.  Lorries, buses, cars, vans, all waiting for the Red Man to stop people from crossing the road, but still nothing happened.  Nobody could go anywhere.  Green Man was really worried.  Whatever could be the matter with his little friend in the light above .Why wasn’t he working?  “Red Man, Red Man, wake up” he shouted, but Red Man couldn’t wake up, he felt too ill.  The paint on his legs had stopped him from moving.

The people in the cars had waited long enough to get on their way and got out of their cars to see what the problem was.  “It’s the Red Man, he’s not working” Green Man heard somebody say “we’d better ring the police”.  Sure enough after a while a policeman came and stopped the children from crossing the road until all the traffic had moved away.  He placed a black cover over the traffic lights and put up a sign saying Out of Order so nobody would use them.  Poor Red Man, he really was feeling very poorly.  Green Man climbed up from his light to see what was the matter.  “It’s the paint on my legs, it’s stopping me from working properly and I feel ill” Red Man told Green Man.  “Don’t worry” said Green Man “I heard the policeman saying that tomorrow someone was going to come and repair you, so you’ll soon be well again”.  Red Man was pleased to hear that and cheered up a bit.  Green Man climbed back into his light and went to sleep.  He was feeling very tired, he had been working all day so was really glad that he was out of action until the repair men came in the morning.

The next morning the repair men came and took Red Man away and in his place they fitted a new Red Man.  Green Man was really upset to see them take his little friend away and hoped he wouldn’t be gone too long.  The new Red Man was eager to get to work and when Green Man tried to make friends with him he wasn’t very friendly.  “Don’t talk to me, I’m too busy to talk to you, you’re only a Green Man, Red Men are more important”.  Green Man felt very upset.  Red man wasn’t more important at all.  Just because he stood at the top of the traffic lights didn’t mean he was more important.  “I don’t like the new Red Man” he thought to himself.  “I hope he won’t be up there for long”.  All day long, every time somebody pressed the button and Green Man flashed Red Man was shouting “Hurry up, I want to shine, I’m better than you”.  Poor Green Man, he really missed his little friend and didn’t want to be in the traffic lights with the new Red Man.

That night, when everything had gone quiet, Green Man climbed out from his light and crossed over the road to see Green Man and Red Man in the lights on the other side of the road.  He told them how the new Red Man didn’t want to be his friend because he thought he was more important than a Green Man and how he felt really lonely without his little friend who had been taken away to be repaired.  “Don’t worry” said the other Green Man, Red Man won’t be away for long, he will soon be repaired and then everything will be alright again.  Just because that awful Red Man in your traffic lights doesn’t want to be your friend, we do and you can always come and talk to us”.  Green Man felt a little bit happier.  Yes, he still had his other two friends and soon the awful Red Man would be taken away. After a while he climbed back down the pole and crossed over the road to get back into his light, but oh dear, as he climbed back up the pole, the nasty Red Man woke up and when he saw Green Man climbing back into the light, he stuck his tongue out and shouted at him.  “You stupid little Green Man leaving the lights, I’m trying to go to sleep and you’ve woken me up now, tell me where you’ve been” and he growled fiercely at Green Man.  Green Man felt very frightened.  He didn’t really want to climb back into his light now, so he slid back down the pole and crossed back over the road again to join his other friends.

When he told the other Red Man and Green Man how horrible the new Red Man had been and how frightened he was of him they were both really angry.  They climbed out from their lights.  “Come on, we’ll come back with you, he won’t dare to shout at all of us” said the other Red Man.  They all crossed over the road together but as they approached the traffic lights, the new Red Man suddenly lit up.  He looked really angry. “How dare you all climb out of the traffic lights without telling me.  I’m in charge now and nobody climbs out of the lights unless I say so.  If you do it again, I’ll thump you all”. “You don’t scare us” shouted back the other Red Man, “You’re not big enough to thump us all”.  “Oh yes I am, and I’m stronger because I’m newer, so get back into your lights or they’ll be trouble and I mean big trouble” and he pulled a horrible face at them all.  The three traffic light men pulled horrible faces back at him and shouted “We’re going on an adventure and you can’t come, you can stay up there all night on your own” and they ran across the road and into the school playground.  “Come back, come back, you can’t go on an adventure without me” shouted the awful Red Man, but nobody took any notice of him.

When the three little traffic light men got into the school playground, the first thing they noticed was a big tin of green paint with a paint brush inside.  The workmen had been painting the school railings.  It looked just like the paint they had jumped into at the garage.  “Better not jump into that” said Red Man “we don’t want to be different colours again and be all stuck up”.  “No” said Green Man “that’s why the other Red Man got ill because the paint had stopped him from working properly.  I hope he soon gets better, I don’t like the new Red Man he’s a bully.  “I wish we could do something to show him he’s not the boss”.  The three traffic light men sat for a long time trying to think of a way how to get their own back, but even though they thought and thought, no one could come up with any ideas.  “Lets go back into the lights now” said Green Man “he’ll have gone to sleep and tomorrow night we’ll climb out of the lights and go on a proper adventure, that will cheer us up”.  They ran back and Red Man and Green Man climbed into their lights on the other side of the road.  Green Man began to climb up the pole to his light very quietly so the new Red Man didn’t wake up.  He wasn’t so brave without his little friends and was really frightened that the new Red Man might thump him.

The next day was an even worse day than the day before.  Every time someone pressed the button for the Green Man, Red Man shouted at him to hurry up because he wanted to shine.  “Hurry up, nobody wants to see you, I’m much better and brighter and more important, you’re just a silly little Green Man”.  Poor Green Man, he was so upset that he started to cry and didn’t hear the boys and girls pressing the button to cross the road.  The traffic just kept moving and the new Red Man kept shining feeling very proud of himself.  Now everybody could see how good he was.  But the people who were waiting to cross the road didn’t thing he was good.  They kept on pressing the button for Green Man to appear but Green Man was too upset to do any work today. More and more people came to the crossing and pressed the button, but still nothing happened.  “Whatever is the matter with the traffic lights today, nobody can cross the road, only a Red Man is working, we’ll never get across the road.  The children were all very concerned. After a while, one of the children’s Dad’s rang for a policeman to come and help them to cross and Red Man was covered up with an Our of Order sign put over him.  He didn’t like that at all and shouted at Green Man.  “Now look what you’ve done, I can’t shine anymore and nobody can see me under this cover.  I’m going to give you a thumping tonight when everything goes quiet”.  Green Man didn’t answer him.  He wasn’t going to get thumped at all because he was going to go on an adventure with his little friends and together they were going to think of a way how to get rid of the horrible Red Man once and for all.

That night when everything had gone quiet, Green Man very quietly climbed out of his light and slid down the pole.  He knew Red Man was asleep because he could hear him snoring.  He crossed over the road and shouted to his little  friends in the other lights.  “Are you ready to go on an adventure?”  Yes, they were, and Red Man and Green Man slid down their pole.  “Shh” said Green Man “don’t make a noise, we don’t want that nasty Red Man to follow us” and they very quietly made their way across the road and into the school playground.  But unbeknown to the three traffic light men, the nasty Red Man had woken up and had seen them go into the school playground.  He decided to follow them and see what adventure they were going on.

The three traffic light men didn’t know the nasty Red Man was following and started to enjoy themselves.  First they climbed onto the top of the climbing frame and had a competition as to who could climb up and down the fastest.  Then they ran around the playground laughing and shouting at one another.  They played hide and seek behind the sheds and football with the tennis balls.  They climbed up onto the trampoline and bounced as high as they could without falling over.  They were having so much fun they had forgotten all about the nasty Red Man now.  Little did they know that the nasty Red Man had followed them and was watching from a distance.  He was hiding behind the big tin of green paint that the workmen were using to paint the school railings.  He was so jealous.  The three traffic light men were having such a good time and he was all on his own.  “Silly little green men” he thought to himself “I’m too good to play with them anyway, I’ll have an adventure of my own.  I’ll show them that I can do better things because I’m a bright new Red Man and I’m the best”.  He started to look around to see what he could do.  The other three traffic light men were really enjoying themselves now and were screaming and laughing with excitement as they ran about in the darkness.  But suddenly they stopped dead in their tracks because there, standing right in front of them, was the nasty Red Man who looked very very angry indeed.

“You think only you three can have fun, but I’m the best traffic light man and I can do something that you three can’t” he told them proudly.  “No you can’t” said the other Red Man “what ever you can do, we can do it better.  “Right” said the nasty Red Man “see that big tin of paint over there, I bet you can’t walk round the edge at the top without falling in”.  “Bet we can” said Green Man “but you’ve got to do it first” “Easy” said the nasty Red Man and he raced over to where the big tin of green paint was.  The three traffic light men followed. The nasty Red Man climbed up to the top of the tin of paint and stood on the very edge feeling very proud of himself.  “Watch me, you silly little green men and stupid red man, you won’t be able to do this because you’re not as clever as me, but I can do it because I’m a brand new Red Man.  “Bet you can’t” shouted back the three little men.  The nasty Red Man began to walk very slowly round the edge of the tin of paint, and he was almost round it when suddenly a big gust of wind blew him over and PLOP he fell into the green paint.  How the other three traffic light men laughed at him.  That just served him right for being such a bully.  “Help, help” the nasty Red Man shouted from inside the tin of paint “Get me out, I can’t get out”.  “Get out yourself, you say you’re so clever” the three little men shouted “I can’t, please help me, I’ll be your friend”.  “We don’t want you for a friend” shouted the green men “we don’t like you, you’re too bossy and you’re a bully” and they walked away.  The other Red man shouted after them “Come back, we must help him or he will drown in the paint”.  “Alright, but we don’t want to be his friend, he’s not been very nice to us”.  The three traffic light men all started to push at the big tin of paint.  It was really heavy and they pushed as hard as they could to try and knock it over.  Finally, it suddenly toppled over and all the green paint spilled out onto the floor.  And there, sitting in the middle of it all was the nasty Red Man, but oh dear, he wasn’t red anymore.  What colour do you think he was.  Yes, he was covered in green paint and he was now a Green Man.  How the three little men laughed at him.  They laughed and laughed.  He wasn’t an important brand new Red Man now he looked a very silly sticky Green Man sitting on the floor in the middle of all the paint.

“What are you silly little men laughing at” he shouted angrily and he stood up.  “You’re a Green Man now like us” shouted the Green Men laughing and pointing at him.  The nasty Red Man looked down at himself.  It was true.  He wasn’t red anymore.  He was just an ordinary Green Man.  He felt so ashamed.  He walked away feeling very foolish.  He climbed up his pole and got back into his light.  He could hear the other three little men all laughing about him as they climbed back into their own lights.  What a brilliant night they had had.  Now the nasty Red Man was a Green Man and he could never again say he was the best because he was a brand new Red Man.  The next morning the workmen came and removed the cover from over the nasty Red Man’s light.  “Let’s see if the traffic light is working properly today.  If not we will have to take it away to be repaired” one of the workmen said.  The children were all waiting to cross the road, but when they pressed the button, instead of just one Green Man appearing, The nasty Red Man who was now a Green Man appeared as well.  How the children laughed.  They thought it was really funny to see two Green Men and the Green Man at the top of the lights had little blobs of red shining through where the paint was burning off.  He looked as though he had got spots. The nasty Red Man felt so ashamed and he couldn’t bear to be laughed at any more.  He didn’t want to be a Green Man.  Green Men were silly and now he was one with spots on.  He stopped working and went to sleep.

After a while the workmen unscrewed the traffic light and took it away with the nasty Red Man inside and who do you think they brought back.  Yes, it was the old Red Man who had been repaired.  Back in the traffic lights again where he belonged.  The other three traffic light men waved to him and felt so happy to see him again.  Now their little friend was back and the nasty Red Man or should we say spotty Green Man, was gone forever.  They couldn’t wait to tell their little friend all about it but for now they had a job to do, making sure that the boys and girls got safely across the road.
